New tailgate for the 245....questions about glass replacement 200

Just about ready to begin the prep work on the total repaint of a 1993 240 wagon. The old tailgate is somewhat warbled and the bottom seam is beginning to swell with rust, so it will be replaced with a NOS tailgate. What are the steps (precautions) to removing the glass from the old tailgate and installing it into the new one? I am concerned about the possibility of damaging the original glass....are special tools required to do this without cracking or chipping it? Any concerns related to the defrosting wires? I really don't want to end up having to buy a new glass as well. Thanks very much in advance for some advice on this. Daryl
