I’m trying to decide on the following choices, Fix up my old 1991 740T, or buy a 940 with a Turbo if I can find it. Get a 940 and turbo it or consider a later model (960) rear wheel drive car.
I really like the turbo engine. It makes the carmore agile in traffic and don't think I'd ever be happy with the 4 cylinder without the turbo.
I’m inclined to want to stay with the RWD cars. They seem to be less trouble than the FWD set up. However, as a Volvo marine mechanic I’ve seen what happens when a 24 valve timing belt breaks, so I’m not too thrilled with the 960. Additionally I’ve had 2 belt failures on my 740 in about 25 K increments, but at least it did not eat the engine.
I’m getting some pretty good blow by in my 230FT and it uses a quart in about 200 Miles. It has about 190,000 on it. I suspect the oil loss may be the turbo, but I have not run a compression check yet.
In the long run, I'm looking to get a lot more miles out of something, but I'm not afraid to take on an extensive rebuild either.
Your thoughts?
