I've traced hard starting after sitting for a day and missing/backfiring/hesitation when goosing the throttle to a faulty in-tank pump (I'd appreciate it if someone with better knowledge can confirm or dispute whether or not this diagnosis fits the symptoms - in any case, I know for a fact that the transfer pump does not operate, so I'm replacing it anyway). FCP claims on their website that I can figure out which one I have by the chassis #, but I was wondering if there is a way to positively identify the pump by some kind of markings on it or the sending unit. I ask because I've seen conflicting information about when the pump changeover took place - FCP claims during the '84 model year, but I've seen some posts here that claim '86 or '87 was when the higher pressure pump began being installed.
If I have the earlier pump, is the upgrade to the later pump no different procedurally than just replacing it with the earlier pump or do I need to modify other components?
Finally, I've seen a couple of posts saying that the 240's transfer pump is the same as that used in a mid-70's chevy. Is this true? Can I just go to Autozone and ask for a chevy fuel pump? If so, which one?
Thank you much for your assistance,
John
