Yesterday I finally finished replacing the headgasket on my 940. If you don't recall, I had to remove the head because coolant was leaking between the head and block just behind the no.4 exhaust port. Upon removing the head, I found the gasket was split and some corrosion around the water jackets on the head. A workshop had the head for over a week and I got it back on Wednesday. The shop seems to have done a great job - it looks just like a new one.
The complete job involved:
new headgasket,
exhaust & inlet manifold gaskets,
throttle body gasket,
new coolant,
new oil & filter
new spark plugs,
new timing belt & tensioner,
new front seals
I also gave the manifolds a good clean inside and out, cleaned the tops of the pistons and cleaned out the entire breather system.
After putting everything back together she fired up first go! I even got the timing spot on even though it's the first time I've done a timing belt.
The engine is definitely running better, too! I haven't yet taken the car for a decent drive but a quick drive around near home, getting the engine up to temp, indicated everything was good.
Yesterday afternoon I was sore as hell - even muscles I didn't know I had were aching. Leaning over an engine bay all day doesn't do much good for one's back. But I am very satisfied overall.
Just thought I'd post this success story.
