On a recent 4 hour interstate highway vacation trip, the AC in our 1993 940 wagon was set for recirculate, fan on 1 or 2 and temperature on full cold. Outside temperature was in the mid-high 80's. When we arrived at our destination, we realized the front and rear passenger side carpets were soaked. I would guess 1-2 quarts of water. It was water, not coolant.
We didnt use the AC for the next week and after we returned home I took out the passenger seat and front carpets, pads, etc. After looking at the AC FAQs, I removed the blower motor and was surprised - the air box was clean, just a few pine needles. I could feel the inlet side of the evaporator coil and it didnt seme dirty. The evaporator drain on the firewall also seemed clean - poked some plastic covered wire in the tube and it was completely open. I also sprayed a lot of water from a garden hose into the air box from the blower motor opening. All the water flowed freely out the evaporator drain and none appeared in the passenger compartment. Then I drove the car for several days with the carpet removed and the AC on various settings. No water appeared in the floor and the evaporator drain seems to work fine.
Does anyone have an idea about what caused the flooded carpet ? My only guess is that the evaporator iced up, but I am amazed at how much water found its way to the carpet in just a few hours. Could a low freon charge cause ice to form on the evaporator ?
Thanks,
Mike
