auxiliary electric fan control 200 1983

This is for a 83 240 turbo with air conditioning and auxiliary electric fan in front of the AC condenser. Right now the fan runs continuously when the engine is on, and my understanding is that this retards air flow at higher speeds. I'd like to regulate it so it's on only when needed, like when stopped with engine on or in stop and go traffic, especially with AC running.
