Sudden outbreak of pitting in clearcoat: why? 200 1991

This afternoon, for no apparent reason, my '91 240 with 171k miles suddenly developed a dense network of tiny pits in the clearcoat on the roof, mostly behind the sunroof. I thought it might be tar from the tree it was parked under, so I took it through a touch-free wash. Now there are many more pits, including on the sunroof, and spreading to the hood and trunk (which already had a few.)

If I end up having to have it painted, it will be a while. Any harm, besides to my ego, in driving it with pitting and flaking clearcoat for a few months? OK to continue washing it in that condition? The paint on the sides is uniformly good.
