Installing hub/bearing - removing race retainer 700 1988

I have a new front hub to install on my 1988 740 Turbo - this is the integral hub and wheel bearing where the brake rotor is separate. The hub was shipped with a retainer to keep the inner race halves in place - it's a tight fit - how do I remove the retainer without dislodging the inner race halves? Anyone done this? Thanks
