Bad gaskets. Is cork an OK substitute?

There is a lot of whistling that I think is coming from the cardboard gaskets around the intake manifold on my 142. I happen to have a roll of 1/16 inch cork. Would it be safe and effective for me to custom make some gaskets from this material? I am concerned about flammability issues and whether the cork would allow air through its pores. Thanks for all suggestions.
