92 245 5speed difficult going into first gear, tightened cable now easier into first,need help with diagnosis 200

hoping to avoid that the tranny is bad;here is some of my thoughts: the cable is stretching, the clutch is getting weak...now with the cable tighter it shifts almost as well as my 85 with the 4 speed /overdrive,so I suspect the transmission is basically good...? help, Kris
