Hey everyone! I am a new member to the message boards. I have just purchased a 1996 Volvo 960 from my mother, who was the only owner. She has kept it very well maintained and I doubt ever drove it above 55mph. I have just driven it about 700 miles from Virginia to Florida and encountered a few problems. Most of them I have discovered by reading the threads here to be common (radio loses FM sensitivity and just scans through static, turning signals stop working sometimes but after restarting car they work again, etc.) The car has about 140,000 miles on it. Today I had an unfortunate problem. After about 600 of the 700 miles the radiator broke. That is being fixed as we speak while I am typing this in a hotel room =]. But one major problem (to me) that I've noticed is that when I get the car to 80mph, which is 3000rpms, as soon as I go above that, the car starts to vibrate very strongly. It makes it very uncomfortable to go about 80mph, which I guess is a good thing in a way, but I am worried that it is an effect of a bigger issue. At lower speeds, this problem is not present, and when accelerating to rpms above 3000 it is not noticeable. I tried changing the mode from economy to sport, but it doesn't change the vibrations. A friend of mine who is a mechanic said it may be the "overdrive gear attempting to engage but is unable to, so it just keeps going back and forth". I know very little about mechanical stuff, so I have no idea if this makes sense. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful. One other possible problem is, I guess a result of my stupidity. When the radiator blew, I didn't realize what happened, I only saw all these lights flashing and the temperature rising fast. Since I was on the highway going 70mph, I figured I needed to get it cooled down as quickly as possible. I put the hazards on, turned the car off (still going 70mph), and pulled into the emergency lane to stop and check the problem. Here is where the stupidity part comes in. As I was slowly decelerating, and going about 25mph, I noticed the car was still in drive. Thinking it may be bad to be in gear while the engine is off, I figured I should put it in neutral. But...and please don't laugh too much...being distracted and worried about why my brand new (to me) car was breaking down...I accidentally put it in park. Which immediately created a grinding sound and since the car was off, it wouldn't let me take it out of park. So I grinded to a halt in park about 40 feet from 25mph. So far it seems the transmission is ok. It starts fine and changes gear without issue, but I am worried that I might have caused some serious problems. So my last question, and sorry for the very long thread, is do you think that I did or if I did, what could the problem be? And what should I have the mechanic check for or do to see? Thanks again in advance for any help and comments!
