My '88 240 M47 has steering wheel shake at around 65mph. At 85mph it gets even worse.
My first thought was that the tires were out of balance. Upon balancing those the tire shop found that one tire was bad. I replaced both front with new tires. Helped, but there is still a slight vibration in the steering wheel.
I have aftermarket wheels that I got from a 740. The tire shop suggested centering rings for the rims, claiming that the rims may not be centering correctly on the hub.
What other possiblities could it be? I've check ball joints & Ty-rods. Both seem fine. Could it be a bad strut?
My next test will be swapping all 4 wheels and tires with another 240 that drives smooth. If that fixes the problem then I can assume it's wheel/tire issues.
Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks
