Airbox Modification and Plugs Fouled 700 1986

After two failed airbox thermostats in two years, I modified the airbox on my 86 740. Result: carbon buildup fouled the plugs. I read subsequently that a faulty preheat hose system can ruin plugs through carbon buildup. How does one avoid this problem once one has discontinued the preheat system (“airbox modification”) altogether?
