Seeping timing belt seals - somebody warned me but whats the big deal? 900

I recently posted a request for advice about whether or not to spend $ to maintain my '94 945. Good counsel received, and thanks. With the new struts and shocks, and a new plastic gizmo in my flame trap my car drives superbly--like new. I won't mention the cost, which was rediculous.

But in my original post I mentioned my seeping seals on my timing belt and somebody warned me "don't wait too long on that - ask me how I know!".

Well, hey, I know the oil is contaminating the water pump gasket and that can't be a good thing. But what is my big worry? Why is this urgent? Pardon the dumb question but what is the failure mode? Why can't this wait a year? Sorry if I appear clueless (it is a realistic image) but I don't have the $400+ to do the timing belt and seals, so I need to procrastinate.

So, those of you who know, please enlighten me...

Thanks, in advance, for any info you can provide.

Markus
