Hose? S90-V90

I have a small coolant leak form a hose that starts at the water pump, looks like a bypass line to a device near the oil filter and is route back. At that device near the oil filter is the point of my very small coolanr leak. What is that device called and what is for? The hose diameter is a bout 3/4" of 1/2". When I replace this hose I assume I'll have to drain coolant first.
