Dummy Mercedes question... 140-160

I miss my 164e so much :(

I just found a 1970 280S, with 55K on the clock and the body and interior look real good. Owner passed away while the car was in the shop with a no start condition. The shop worked on the head and it no longer has compression, claims it needs rings.
So, if it does, are rings hard to do for a newbe? Should I tackle this? It will also take me back to the carburator days which I haven't experienced in 40 years. I am not even sure if the block is aluminum or iron, but if it needs new sleeves I will be dead on arrival.
My garage does not have a hoist, so pulling an engine is out of the question.

Glutton for punisment,

Klaus

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)
