Heater Control valve - what benefit is it? 900 1994

About 2 years ago I replaced all my radiator and heater hoses and put in a new heater control valve. Both the old control valve and the new one sit in the fully open position all the time as there is no vacuum in the line that is supposed to control the valve. Along with rampant ivy in the front garden fixing this problem is one of those jobs I never get around to.

I was wondering the other day what real benefits a heater control valve that actually worked would give me. My heater works fine in winter, and so does my air conditioning in summer. What am I missing out on by having a fully open valve?
