Hi everyone,
My 89 240 has been rapidly developing a loud clunk from the front right suspension. On sharp turns, such as turning into the driveway, there is a loud thunk and it feels as though the wheel has some play.
When watching the car from the outside, you can see the right hand wheel (on a tight left hand turn)has way heaps of positive camber, so much so that it looks like the tyre is going to pull off the bottom of the wheel. Then if you reverse, the tyre will go to heaps of negative camber, in the same lock!!!
When inside the car reversing on the same lock you would use to pull into a driveway (left hand, Australia), you can hear the right tyre scrubbing on the road as if it is being dragged along.
You can hopefully see now there is a dramatic problem with the front right suspension geometry. Yes, the wheel bolts are all done up, it's definately not the wheel moving on the hub or play in the bearing.
It is as if the whole strut is allowing the wheel to move inwards or outwards. Would this point to a mount or something else in the strut setup. I took the cap off over the nut for the strut and bounced the car. There is barely any movement evident.
These car is a daily commuter and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Nick.
