Auto Tranny slip in reverse 700 1987

I have an '87 740 GLE N/A, with a AW71 transmission. After driving about two hours the other day I tried backing up my driveway. The transmission did not want to co-operate. At first felt like it did not go into gear and then it did but it seemed to slip (did not pull very hard). This is my description as best as I can remember. I checked the fluid level and it looked fine.
I bought the car about a year ago and I have not changed the tranny fluid since I have had it. Is this reverse problem a sign that it is overdue for a fluid change or is this a sign that something else is wrong?
Anyone got any ideas?
