Hi,
I posted several years ago about my experience with break in the coolant line to oil cooler at oil filetr in my 940T. Temp meter in the far end of red, but synthetic oil saved engine. Seems my head gasket didn´t survive since during the following year I started getting increase coolant pressure. Finally the coolant line from heater valve to head (just under intake manifold) burst. Several mechanics before had argued there was no problem with head gasket.
Problem was, the coolant line broke far away from home. Luck was that it broke just in front of a gas station with supply of right inner diameter rubber tubing. Heater valve broke when trying to replace line (probably brittle by age, and new tubing thickwalled and stiff, putting stress on valve plastic stud), had to take heater valve away, but with a long piece of fresh tubing and some water I was OK, drove car for a couple of weeks (wintertime, no problem with heating, climate control system worked okay in this winter setting) till I found a mechanic who did the gasket for me at a reasonable price. Car ran fine after that, no pressure build up in coolant tank, coolant line from block to radiator now with reasonable pressure. Engine power and performance still lovely.
Lessons: 1. Change your coolant lines if you have an oil filter cooler type system (this has repeatedly been suggested by others here at the board, but needs reiteration, mine LOOKED fine but were not ok.
See http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineTurbo.htm#TurboOilCoolerMaintenance))
2. Feel your coolant line between block and radiator now and then, to get a reference idea of the pressure, for the future. Of all the symptoms I think this was where I and the mechanics who said there was no problem were really mistaken.
Some months ago I got an offer to buy a used V70 2004, which I couldn´t resist, and parted with my 940T. I thought it was best to leave this nice car in the hands of someone with the necessary time to look after it since there were several signs of normal wear that I had to realise I would not find time to deal with.
Best Wishes, and will look in here now and then, Love ya all for the good advice shared here. The FAQs are GOLD
