Hello bricksters. Thought I'd solicit some input. AW70 trans has been without fourth gear overdrive for awhile. Rather than messing with solenoids, and since I wasn't sure I had a good one, I decided to try the bypass routine. I modified the existing, fried solenoid to eliminate the fourth gear lockout option. I also replaced the rear trans mount while I was in there. The shift rod's center bushing, the insulator before the front swivel connector, is a bit loose. The rod doesn't rest atop the solenoid, but it's close. Here's the rub (no pun intended): Fourth gear is back and the trans seems to be working wonderfully. No slipping, no hard shifts. However at random points, there is a terribly loud banging coming right through the shifter. I can actually feel the shifter jump. It will "rattle" several times, then stop. Does not seem to be consistent with any gear, gearchange, cornering, accelerating, decelerating--nothing! I can only imagine that the trans is jumping and the solenoid is banging into the shifter rod. I have not had the driveshaft out to check. However, thinking about my new rear trans mount, which is much stiffer than the old one, I can't help wondering if my center bearing or perhaps a u-joint might be binding causing the trans to shake violently. Anyone have a similar experience?
