Engine oil suggestions for Midwest winters 200 1986

I live in Chicago and have been running conventional 10W30 year round. Too avoid the groans of starting my car in 20-below weather, I am considering going full synthetic in winter.

What do others run in the bitter cold months?

Would running full synthetic do any damage? I have heard that syntheic oil will "create leaks" in that it will leak from places that conventional oil will not. I have a DRY engine and prefer to keep it that way.

Thanks
Pablo
