idle adjustment 200 1986

I am having problems adjusting the idle on my car. It appears to be to low right now. I have turned the black plastic knob on the bottom of the throttle body with no change in the idle speed. I was advised to ground the blue/white wire and then adjust. All this did was to cause the engine to stumble then stall. Does anybody have any advice. Thanks in advance.
