79 240 automatic no shifty when cold 200

Hey all,

Got a 79 244 with the 3 speed auto. When the cars cold, you can shift it between reverse, drive and back again and the car will move. But when you start to go, it won't shift out of 1st gear. Irritating. Now, after about 10 minutes of driving around in 1st gear (longing for the freedom 2nd and 3rd offered) it started shifting normally. Any ideas??? Or, am I looking at changing transmissions? ATF fluid level is correct.

A little history on the car: Got the car last March for $200. Bad engine, so I didn’t know how the car drove. Found a replacement B21F motor on the Craigslist for $50 and put it in. Engine runs great. Did a little body and paint work on it to make it look nice, and I’m hoping it will make a great commuter car.

Thanks one and all. Anyone else ever experience this??? My last B21 / AW55 car never did this.
