gearbox failure? automatic transmission 900 1992

arrow light on dash as well as on gear shift are flashing. manual say 'gearbox failure'. car drives ok but the transmission does feel like it's going, albeit slowly. car doesn't downshift properly all the time and feels as if i'm stopping in 3rd or 4th gear.

anybody have a sense of the problem, i.e., cost? recommend and service station in the new york city?
