parking brake adjustment 900 1995

The parking brake on my 945 doesn't work and I want to try to adjust the cable tension at the lever between teh front seats. I saw in teh Haynes that teh adjustment barrel is behind the rear ashtray, but I can't figure out how to remove the stupid thing. (the ash tray comes out, but the socket the ashtray fits into seems both solidly in place and fragile - which precludes pulling really hard)

Any suggestions welcome - I miss my e-brake.
