91 240 Automatic Not charging 200 1991

Hey All,

I have a 91 240 Automatic that my sister drives. She called me today to tell me that the car wouldn't start, turned out the battery was dead. She didn't leave any lights on, battery is 6 months old.

Told them (my mother and my sister) to put it on the slow charger and I would head over (only charger I have at their house). It had been on the charger about 2 hours when I got there. Battery was showing about 12.25 volts and had enough power to crank the car - so the battery is good and there are no current drains.

With the car running, I showed about 11.9 volts at idle (remember, this is off of a 12.25 volt battery, not a fully charged 12.6 volt battery)

At about 3,000 RPM, I show 12.2 Volts, so the alternator is putting out (and more than the battery voltage) but not much (and enough that the battery will go dead eventually).

So, before I tear into the job and pull the alternator, do these alternators have replaceable voltage regulators? I realize that there may be multiple versions of alternators for this car, so I'll just take the info I can get.

If there is no replaceable voltage regulator, has anyone here bought an alternator from autozone? They have one for 108 after the code, which sounds pretty nice (and theyll test the old one and everything too, plus take it back right away if its the wrong one).

Thanks a bunch for the help guys.
