Can I clean the Air Mass Meter wire?? 700 1989

I think my idle problem is a dirty AMM. I've installed a spare 016 and it works OK. Should I try to clean the inside of the original with AMM cleaner from PepGuys? Or is there some special solvent to use?
Or should I just throw away the offending AMM? it still works OK at highway speeds, but may be running too lean.

What to do?
