Drilling Weep Holes in Exhaust System?

When I bought a Volvo cat-back exhaust kit, I was surprised to find that Volvo had returned to the over-the-axle style of middle pipe.

Now that I need to install the kit, memories of misery from long ago come to mind. If I remember correctly, that over-the-axle style pipe is a bear to work on if only it or the resonator ever needs replacing. Since that pipe and its dedicated resonator were supplied by Volvo, I am bound to use it.

Perhaps someone can confirm another vague memory I have. I seem to recall that when 240's only came with the over-the-axle pipe, a trick to extend the life of the exhaust system was to drill weep holes (1/8"-3/16") in the underbelly of the resonator at either end.

Is my memory correct?

Thanks,
Rich
