Believe it or not, the ECU was correct with the 1.3.1 AMM code. Replaced the AMM with a new 001 unit from FCP and "poof" problem went away. Doing a post mortem on the old AMM showed that the temp sensor measured open at higher temps while using an Ohm meter. The car is much happier now and hopefully, the gas mileage will improve as a result!
