Accessories are a drain

When I turn my car off and remove the key, two things happen. If I have the headlights on, they automatically turn off. But, if I have the accessory/day markers on (middle position on the knob), they stay on, and a few times now, have drained the battery.
I was wondering, if this is normal? The headlights do what they should, but I have a feeling the accs. should turn off too! If it's supposed to be that way, I don't like it. The question now is, how can I fix it?
