replacing distributor cap Part 2 200

I just recently posted about my problem of mixing up the order of my plug wires while replacing my distributor cap, rotor and wires. I think I may have them in the correct order now but I am not sure. The engine starts and runs fine for maybe 2 seconds and then just dies. I tried reordering the plugs and it wouldn't start at all. I know the firing order is 1-3-4-2 in a clockwise direction but how do I tell which is #1 on the cap? And would it start at all if they were in the incorrect order? To make matters even more hairy, I accidently left my ignition on over night and have just a few cranks before my battery goes flat...
