About a week ago my car would not shift into park or if it did it would pop out. My car is an automatic and it would go into all othe gears just fine. I used the car like this for a couple of days before it started to slip out of drive and would lose pull until it would just stop. It honestly felt like the car was slipping out of drive and into neutral. I managed to get the car home and checked the shift linkage underneath the car and found that the bushings were gone that go on the gear selector rod and the shifter arm. This would explain why the car was not actually going into park. I got the bushings from Volvo and replaced them and TRIED to adjust the arm and rod. I took the car out for a test drive, took it out on the HWY and got it up to 70 and did not have any problems. I then took it on a back road and found a steep hill and came to a complete stop at the bottom of it. As I accelerated up the hill I felt the car shudder a bit and then it verly slowly climbed up the hill and after it reached the top it went forward just a bit more before it finally stopped pulling. When the car would stop like this no matter what gear you put it in (reverse, D, D1, or D2) it would not move. I had to put the car into park and turn it off. Only after doing this could I get the car to go back into drive.
I've had cars that had their transmission go bad before and it was nothing like this. There is no sudden jerking or popping. Sometimes the only way I knew that it was no longer pulling was the RPMs would suddenly jump up like when you are pressing the gas in neutral. Someone suggested that after I replaced the bushings, if the gear selector arm and rod was not adjusted properly, that it could be causing these problems. Could this be the case and if not, is there anything aside from the tranny that could be causing these problems? Thanks for your help.
