Auto shifter stuck 900 1995

I can't get my AW-72 gear shifter to shift out of park unless I use the shiftlock override. The only problem is that the shiftlock override button is missing on the shifter so I have to insert a screwdriver into where the button is supposed to be and free up the gearshift lever which is a bit of a pain.

Anybody have any ideas as to what may be causing the shiftlock not to work properly ?

I'm converting the car over to a manual tranny soon anyways but it would be nice to not have to use the screwdriver to get it out of park in the meantime.
