'89 Volvo: engine cut out / inconsistent response after 50 mi. drive - electrical?

Hello all. I have an '89 Volvo 740 SW with 260K. Had it for a year and its run well, even drove it from NC to Michigan last October no problem (Mostly I drive it 10-20 miles/outing, including highway) BUT, I took it out last weekend, 40 miles on the highway, get off and within 2 miles I have a complete failure - no engine, all warning lights up. I pull it over, it turns over, then cuts out/dies. Waited a few more, got it to run, got it out on the road, and it was having fits - the gas just wouldn't respond, then it would, then it wouldn't - at this point I smelled a little electrical - fuel pump relay??. I had it towed to a shop.

Here the intersting part. It's a good Volvo shop, and they did all the elctrical testing, and they couldn't find the cause!! (they found a frayed, though working, crank sensor, but that wouldn't explain the symptoms.) It ran fine around town for them. I'm picking it up in two days and am worried about taking it out on the highway home. I've read related posts and I wonder what I might look for or do from here. If it fails again, what might I do to pinpoint the cause? I've read about Volvos that eat fuel pump relays, about soldering points and so on, but I'm no ace mechanic - I just want a car that doesn't fail. They said my battery is ok, but I have noticed recently it doesn't turn over like it used to. They also replaced my alternator belt, which had a couple of gouges on the topside. Could that have contibuted to an amperage overload? ANY help with my situation would be very much appreciated.

Thank you all,
Justin
