Stuck in Overdrive 700 1991

I already did a search but it seems my problem is a little different.
My overdrive light and switch are turned on but when I disengage it seems to stay in O.D.( light goes off) and stays in third? I will check the relay tommorow. But just curious if anyone had this problem.
PS I am in the process of needing a in tank prepump I dont think they are related problems.
