Challenging Acceleration Problem 900

I have several problems which may or may not be related:

1. A few months ago, the car would not start, and I wound up having both fuel pumps replaced.

2. I almost always have to start the car at least twice from a cold start; it dies just from an idle, or when I put the car in gear. Often tapping the accelerator peddle will keep it running.

3. ( Most annoying problem ) Frequently, the car gets into a mode in which I cannot accelerate (will back-fire if I try). To get my power back, I have to stop the car, and turn off the engine, and start the car again. Sometimes this takes several attemps. Once the power is back, the engine accelerates very strongly and runs very well.

Any knowledgable ideas would be appreciated ... thanks.
