wiring at gas tank 200 1993

Just when I thought I'd never own another 240 I came across a fairly well maintained 93 245 - classic #24, auto, approx 180K miles for only $500. I put it on the road for less than $300 additional dollars so am quite pleased with my purchase. One of the reasons the previous owner gave for getting rid of it so cheaply (it has new brakes and tires all the way around) was a persistant oil leak - he didn't know about the flame trap and so had never cleaned it - turns out the oil separator needed cleaning too. I'll see if that helps the leak. To my question: The in tank pump and fuel gauge wiring connections are rusted and broken - has anyone had success in reattaching the wiring without removing the bung to the gas tank?

By the way it is great to be driving a 240 again - I didn't realize how much I missed our 83 245.
