I've always liked being able to add and change the switches in the center lower dash.
When I revived the AC on my '82, I added the blue switch to the right of the AC thermostat switch as sort of a master AC switch, as well as the green switch in the center which serves to energize the auxiliary fan I added. That fan is also wired to come on whenever the AC compressor is on, except when in overdrive. I wired the lamps internal to the switches to serve as pilot lights for those two functions: the blue pilot is lit whenever the compressor is energized, the green pilot is lit whenever the auxiliary fan is energized. (This can be a little too much of a light show when driving at night.)
I never use the cigarette lighter so I'd be happy to devote that space to something more useful. As far as its use as a power outlet, I already have two switched lighter-type outlets under the passenger seat for chargers and so on. It would be great to find some low-profile map light or something to put in its place.
Thanks!
