Does the 'Italian tune-up' really work this well? 900

Checked the oil, it was full, on Friday afternoon. Drove 288 mi. to Austin, Mn. Checked the oil on Saturday morning, down 1 qt. Added oil, did the brickboard research then the "Italian tune-up" on I-90 Sunday morning (not much traffic). Drove home (same route) and checked the oil this morning and it was still full and clean. All oil checks were on level surface after waiting overnight. I've read about this for several years, but this is the first time I've tried it. Is there something I'm missing, or should I do this periodically?
