did some lookin over on the amm on my 1990 240dl and the idle improved, however, 200

unplugged the connector and the idle doesn;t take off anymore, the engine was shaking a little check eng light lit up and won't go off now, and i reved i, when i did so, it was cutting out. when i plugged it in, it don't do it as much any more. will it hurt to leave it off? also the check eng light stays on now. when the engine started to shake at idle before, the light would come on. now it stays on. engine still shakes at idle now, did before. but the idle don't take off.
