I have a Jan 1994 940 2.0 SE turbo estate, auto box, 203K miles. Does mainly less than 20 miles daily, occasional towing a horsebox. Owned 2 years, full history to 180K, new battery and alternator last summer. It came cheap, and as tyres and exhaust are on borrowed time I have delayed the big service which was due at 200K, which would include timing belt, transmission fluid etc and will cost more than the car is worth, half expecting to run it another few months at best.
It has been using coolant for about 5-6 weeks, emptying the reservoir in 100 miles though there is no obvious dripping, so I have been checking it very frequently. Similarly oil, slight leak from rear crankshaft seal so it is checked and topped up weekly. It smokes a little (white) when cold but soon clears.
All weekend it had trouble starting, turned over but not firing. Early Saturday it jump-started ok and was fine all day, Sunday and Monday it started after 15-20 attempts, now it won't fire at all. Fuel fuse (?) suggested as there is no smell of petrol even after repeated attempts to start.
I have had a fuel pump relay fail on a past 740 but that car always started, just died randomly when driving. Spent a lot of money having the fault investigated before getting correct advice here for the cheap fix. Is it worth changing this or is the filter or the fuel pump itself more likely, again probably costing more than the car is worth to have professionally fitted. I'd rather put the money towards a replacement than have a big bill now and still have it fail its test on tyres and exhaust.
Thanks, any ideas appreciated, and advice not to skip services in future will be heeded....
