blower motor screeches for 5 minutes then back to normal 200

hi there,

when i turn on the heat on my 90 240 sedan, she screeches a nasty sound. if i turn the knob to the maximum blow setting on and off several times over a minute or two it goes back to normal.

is this a problem with the fan itself or possibly the resistor?

should i get it changed before the really cold weather comes?

if so, should i do the heater core while i'm at it? i sometimes get a plastic like smell with the heater on?
