timing marks and piston position 900

Before I removed the head from my 1998 S90's B6304 engine, I carefully aligned the timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshafts. When I finally got the head off the engine, I was surprised to see that the number 1 piston was not fully at the top of its stroke. Instead, pistons 3 and 4 are almost at the top of their stroke. The small notch at the rear of the crankshaft cog is still aligned with the raised notch on the engine block. The crankshaft has not moved. I thought that notch represented top dead center for piston 1. Is crankshaft position correct? The car ran fine before I started disassembly to address excessive oil consumption so I am reluctant to move the crankshaft to number 1 top dead center. Is anyone certain how it should look?
