Hi,
I'v been following this forum for quite a while, and I must say there are
a lot of clever guys here. This is a long post, but I hope some of you can help with the following.
Volvo 245 1991 230F 160k miles (255kkm).
I runs rich, 2-3-2, with black plugs so it will kill the O2 sensor and I have replaced it 3 times already.
I have done the following repairs.
New FPR
New AMM
New Plugs, Leads, Distributor, (not the rotor)
Cleaned Throttle body
Cleaned and tested IAC
Tried 3 different ECU's
Installed Vacume and Fuel Pressure Gauge, readings OK.
After all this it ran quite well for about a month, except for a slight hesitation sometimes when i pressed the accelerator pedal after coasting.
I guess the 230F does this, because my 1992 940 230FB does the same while
my wife's 87 240 230K with Solex Sisac runs perfect under all conditions
(with a CO of 0.09% and about 33 miles/gallon, Life with a carb was simple!)
Then one morning the light came on after a couple of minutes at idle
when the engine was warm. Afterwards it was not running well, but not that bad either. I reset the dreaded light and parked it at work.
Later in the day when I started it up it would hardly run at all, and I swapped the AMM, ECU, Ignition Amplifier, Spark Leads, Distributor cap.
Nothing helped.
I was able to run it home (4miles). Day after it ran fine!
Since then, about 2 weeks ago, it has failed 2 more times and I have been able
to do some measurements. It has failed when the wheather has been very wet and
cold, but it mostly have been! The last time I was able to start it, WOT gave
about 3000 RPM and not that much smoke and rather white when cold.
Not possible to drive, but running a rough idle.
After 20 minutes it suddenly came to life and I could drive it home.
When it failes I have verified The following:
Swapping ECU does not help.
Coolant temp sensor OK (about 3V at cold start (10C sorry for C) 0.45V warm)
No leaking Injectors. (keep fuel pressure when I kill it with the clutch in 5th)
Injector Opening Time at Idle goes from cold 10ms to warm 5.2ms.
Does anybody know if this is right.
It now runs bad all the time as if on 3 cylinders sometimes. WOT will make it
run better after a while but....
I'm getting a bit bored by all this trouble with no help from the ECU!
I already ordered a MegaSquirt and Wideband O2 Sensor that I plan to
use as a diagnostic tool. The performance of the Volvo is good enough for
me, but the diagnostic capabilities of the ECUs are NOT.
I want to install the MegaSquirt with the original wiring so that I can
switch between MegaSqiurt and Bosch ECU. For that I need a ECU Plug.
Does anybody have a defect 561 or 951 or some other defect ECU with the 35 pin
plug for sale?
