Optima red top battery failure 200

About 2.5 years ago, I installed an optima battery in our 92 245 and it worked great. Yes, a bit of re-routing of the battery cables was required as the terminals are swapped from stock, but not bad.

Anyway, I've had the car off-line for about the past 6 weeks (with battery unhooked) doing numerous nuisance repairs and a few mods as time permitted. Went to start the car last night for the first time, and the battery was dead. Well, by dead, I mean with the cables unhooked, the battery measured 6.2V. I tried charging it with a 4A charger, but the voltage never went over 6.8V... and dropped back down to 6.2V after 5 minute of just sitting there... three shorted cells... dead battery.

I took the dead battery back to where I bought it 30 months ago, they replaced it free of charge without question. It stinks that it failed in the first place, but it is nice to know that a 3 year free replacement warranty actually still means something in this world.

I know these batteries are not a direct fit for our bricks, but they do work very nicely. The one in my Eclipse is 5 years old and actually sits on top of the transmission (FWD) so it sees a lot of heat, the higher CCA in the same package size is a nice bonus. Downside, initial procurement price of around $120, double that of a quality brand name standard battery.

Just an FYI, and the next time I need another battery, it will probably be an Optima red top as long as it fits the car.

ps. If anyone is interested in the re-routing of the bat cables in late model 240s, let me know, not sure it will work in 90 and earlier 240s though.
