power loss & overheating? 200 1983

Hi, all!
Got a 1983 244 just yesterday, and seem to have some issues...

Actually, it's my son's car... he went to pick it up, and on the way back home, it began losing power and the temperature gauge began to rise above where it should be...

I went and rescued him, did a compression check (200-190-190-190), scraped the 25A fuse, and drove it home without further incident... This morning, he drives it to work, and, about 7 or 8 miles from home, same symptoms, except that he's able to nurse it along in the right lane, and get to work...

It'g showing 101k, but the odo. doesn't work reliably... doesn't LOOK like a car with huge miles on it....

Been a lot of years since I've owned a Volvo... last one was a 1975 245... old pushrod engine in new body style....

Any suggestions as to where I might start sniffing for this problem?

Thanks a heap!

Joe
