'93 940 Volvo has 350k miles. New alternator, battery and starter in last six months. Gave it my son to use for school. In the last three days it died on the road twice. The way he described it first the lights dim and the speedometer and instruments act strange. Then the car dies. He’s been lucky and able to coast into a parking lot both times. The car will not start and acts like the battery is dead. The starter clicks but does not turn over. The headlights are dim. The first time we tried it about ten minutes later and it turned over like nothing was ever wrong. Ran perfectly. I snugged up the ground connections under the hood. Tonite it did it again. Two hours later it started up fine. We drove it home and put a charger on the battery. The display said 12.7 volts and 85% charged. In less than an hour it was at 100% and 13.4. I am going to replace the alternator ground wire tomorrow so I can eliminate it from the list.
What’s going on here?
