245 folding back seat lever is weak!

Is it common for the handle on the back of the rear folding seats(245) to break?

When I bought the car (92 245dl) It was broken...no problem, i'll fix it.
a few weeks later I break it again...with very little force.

is this common?
are older 245s the same design?

the cables slide fine and are not seized

Does any one have a good solution?
I don't want to replace it again...and likely break it again.
