Overheating- Bad Thermostat? Twice? 200 1989

Hi,
I've got an 89 240 sedan that occasionally overheats when first started. It intermittently goes up very close to the red. I have previously bypassed the temperature compensation board so it's not just fluctuation. After a few minutes, it will suddenly drop to the normal operating temperature and run fine. This seemed like a sticking thermostat so I replaced it with new one from FCP Groton. It still has the problem.

So, is it likely I got a new thermostat that was bad, too? Or is there some other potential cause that I need to investigate?

Thanks!
Lyle
